Memorial Day, a time for reflection and appreciation for those men and women who have given their life on behalf of all Americans. This is a day that evokes a range of emotions from gratitude, sadness, and pride. For those of you outside of the USA, I should explain to you how we celebrate the ultimate sacrifice that some of our fellow citizens have given in honor of our country.
Today throughout this fine land there will be parades held in every city, town, and burg. Spectators will wave their little Chinese made American flags as fez-wearing Shriners drive in a zig-zag pattern down Main Street in tiny cars and scooters. The local High School Band will march down the boulevard blaring a discordant cacophony of sounds that is actually a bad version of Hang On Sloopy. Here’s to you Glenn Miller, thank you for your service.
I was glad to see on television this morning that one of my favorite Memorial Day celebrations continues. I saw a commercial promoting the profoundly moving Macy’s Memorial Day Mattress Sale. What says, “Thank you Pat Tillman” more, than waking up from a good night’s sleep with a straight spine? I’ll tell you what, the freedom that these fallen soldiers have provided to us that allows the private and public swimming pools to open today and be invaded by kids who cannot control their urge to pee in the deep end. I find that to be a fine tribute to the United States Marines…Semper Fi!!
Of course what would Memorial Day be without the President chiming in? President Bush will give an address today at Arlington National Cemetery. I am sure his words will be stirring. His speech may sound something like this, “These fallen heroes have given the ultimate sacrifice to their country to defend our freedom. It’s a great sacrifice to give, and especially hard on the ones that they leave behind, but it’s a sacrifice I’m willin’ to make.” Bravo Mr. President, stay the course!!
Festivities will be taking place in backyards throughout the country as well. Families will remember fallen loved ones by throwing a slab of ribs on the grill and playing badminton with a red, white, and blue shuttlecock. The crazy uncle will receive third degree burns inside of his mouth because he bit into an overcooked brat which exploded and inundated his mouth with liquid hot pig juice. Don’t worry, the pain will be dulled by the copious amounts of alcohol he has consumed. (Ed. Note: Please refrain from interjecting personal experiences.) The backyard barbeque is such a healing event.
This Memorial Day we have troops fighting a needless ill-conceived war in Iraq, dodging snipers and IEDs. Don’t worry too much about them, because our Commander-in-Chief has a plan for victory. It is more important than ever that we Americans hold cookouts, complain about gas prices, and joke about the latest Lindsay Lohan bender, because if we don’t do this, the terrorists win…Or something like that.
Cheers?

This particular rumination should appear in every newspaper in the country.
Thanks for enlightening non-Americans, Matt! Effective post. Have a great day, and don't get any brat burns. Cheers!
So true ~~ but no words can desribe how sad I am at that fact.
Wow. Thanks Jamie. I appreciate the kudos. Have a great day, Cheers!!
Lizza: Thanks my friend, enjoy your day and I'll try to burn myself.
Cheesy: Sad but true indeed Cheesy, but if you'll excuse I am off to Macy's. Cheers!!
Sad to say, I'm off to Macy's too...really!(and to hug a sailor)..hehe
Great post tho.....
Peace
Why do I think that you adore the idea of a hot brat exploding pig juice in your mouth;-)
Seriously biting and spot on post Matty. What Janna and Cheesy said.....
Anchors Aweigh Odat. Enjoy your day.
TB: You did it again. It's Jamie not Janna. "Too many windows open again?" ; ) Thanks though and have a good Memorial Day.
LOL--it is JAMIE
Nice try sidestepping my comment though
In a lot of European countries a memorial day was celebrated on 8 June as this was the day of second world war's end.
Who doesnt adore exploding pig juice in one's mouth? Cheers!!
Thanks for the info and for stopping by Gattina. I did not know that. Cheers!!
Hey, What happened to G-Dub's distinct vernacular? Did he find good language like some people find good religion?
Outa the way Badway.
It's Memorial Day, I cut him some slack. Cheers Badway!!
happy Memorial day and Manic Monday!!
MATT-MAN: OK, compared to this, I did phone it in today. No time for jokes. Matt, today's post was a perfect example of your ability to make serious points within a coaster ride of snark.
Congrats on a tremendous post for Memorial Day.
No matter what, we can not forget the troops who are out there on the line today and tomorrow...
Thanks for stopping tegdirb and Happy Manic Monda and Memorial Day to you.
Well thank you very much Vin, and I mean that. I never forget the troops and everyday wish that they were back home and not at risk from Dunbya's denial. Cheers my friend.
What a great post. You're a fine American. I find the subject so depressing that I avoided it today... That probably makes me a coward or a comunist or something.
Thanks Marilyn...I love this country but I am not some blinded "patriot". Much like religion, I do not like organized religion, I also do not like some of the decisions our country makes. Americns are not "sacrificing" for this "war", because its a choice by Dubya. He has bastardized Patriotism. Cheers!!
This is my first visit and I must say...
I like you, Matt-Man.
I fully appreciate your gall and sarcasm about the state of our government, the priorities of our people and this ridiculous way of life that we are all living. I am the wife of a soldier who is anti-war, anti-lying Presidents, and has been to Iraq to risk his life for this nonsense. I am the lucky American who gets to see all of this from many viewpoints and make my own judgements and opinions. And, my opinion is that this is all just very, very wrong. All of it.
Great post!
One of the most important thing we can teach our children is respect for our veterans and gratitude for those who were lost.
In Canada, we celebrate remembrance day in November, and it is one of the saddest days of the year.
I took the Chicklet to my Nation's capital last year for the ceremonies. She walked up to an elderly gentleman, a veteran, who was waiting for the parade to start. She grabbed his hand and gave it a slight tug. Once she got his attention she gazed at him with her big blue eyes and said Thank You. I cried (although I kept saying it was the rain) and he beamed. I do believe it was one of my proudest moments.
Wonderful post my dear.
108: My dad served and I tried to join the Air Force but was rejected. I love the security of a strong defense, but I also do not want those folks put in the position of waging a non-winnable (with this President's agenda) war. I appreciate your husband's valor and courage and while I am one who mat be labeled a liberalpeace-nik, let him know that I pray for him and all of his comrades and you as well you...I pray for his safe return. Cheers...
Anndi: I think what is most important is that we teach our children the respect for life. And if young men and women are sent to war it has to be a very very good cause. Cheers!!
Peace to you, my friend.
Please keep my nephew, Jason, and my nephew-in-law, Shawn, in your thoughts and prayers as they prepare to be shipped out to Iraq and Afghanistan, respectively.
Agreed my dear. As I said, respect and thanks for those who have served is ONE of the most important things we can teach our children.
The choices that politicians make cannot however be held against those who chose to serve.
If we could, by remembering how precious life is and how deep the price paid has been, avoid all wars my heart would rejoice.
Hopefully our children will bring a much needed change if we fail to.
Matt-man: Please. The hubby is as liberal as it gets and sees this war as an atrocity and thinks his Commander in Theif is a joke. It puts him in interesting positions being that he's military...lol.
And... he is home safe and sound right now. He has done Iraq and made it home after that deployment and we'll see if he has to go back. I hope not :-(
Peace to you Songbird, I will keep them in my prayers...
Anndi, my son wants to join the army and he's 12. I am nortsaying it's not a rightgeous profession, I would just rather he be a poet or a teacher...I hope he changes his mind.
108: I understood everything you said. I hope everything works out not only for you but all. I also appreciate your husband's courage for being a liberal who is fighting this war. Cheers.. I hope is deployments are over...
Your irreverance is spot on Sir.
There is such value in the service of our men and women in uniform, and it's clear you respect that.
Yes I do Trav...Happy Memorial Day my friend..
Amen to all that was said. In the midst of all that memorial day has become, it's good to see a reality check post.
It's taken us a few years to grasp it [also aliens] but we've got it now.
p.s. your profile says 'no longer practicing' does that mean you've mastered it?
Cheers
Spot on post Matt. From mattress to Iraq I do believe you shine a spotlight on what is wrong with our current value systems. I hug my WW2 Vet grandfather today and got him a second piece of pie. Beats the heck out of hollow speeches and pillowtops.
It should be a 'day of silence', but instead, it's just like you said, bbq's, half off sales and other misc. stuff.
In any event, Happy Memorial Day!
Memorial Day has always been a day when we celebrate my grandfather's birthday. It's only in recent years that this day has taken on a more somber note. I can't imagine why. I actually plan on ripping Congress and the anti-war effort to shreds on my blog tomorrow.
Your post was perfect. It must be nice to not have sucky blog content.
Thanks very much Lisa. I hope you enjoyed your fun in the sun this weekend.
Mcewen: I have indeed mastered it. I found out that I can get to heaven without handing the Vatican another gold bauble. Cheers!!
Starrlight: I appreciate your comment. And I will be visiting my WWII vet dad next week at his gravesite on his B-Day. I hope he enjoyed the pie!!
Deb: Same to you Deb. I find it incresingly hard to not be so cynical these days.
Allie: I am sure you will do a yeoman's job on your hit piece. And you know my dear, that I love you AND your blog. Cheers!!
I couldn't have said it better myself... spot on...
Hope you had a good Memorial Day!
Thank ya Dixie. Cheers!!
