Sweetest Day: Yeah, Whatever...

Today is Sweetest Day. A day to let that special person in your life how much they mean to you. A day to celebrate love. A day that undoubtedly was invented by some rude hag that couldn't get any attention from her husband without the aid of Hallmark, peer pressure, and a bottle of Jack Daniels.

Here at the Bagwine environs, Schmoop and I are protesting this faux celebration by referring to each other as "asshole" all day, and then this evening each of us are having sex with someone we hardly know. Do I feel good about this? You're damn right I do.

If you are celebrating Sweetest Day today in the manner it is intended, I do not mean to pee on your day. In fact, I would like to pass on to you something that tells a story of two people who were each others Sweetest not only on one day a year, but for a lifetime.

My mom and dad are both gone now, but as they were for fifty some years on Earth, I am sure that they are together still. How can I be so sure? My dad wrote the following poem for my mom some years ago. While he wrote on how he felt about her, I know that my mom felt the same about him. Enjoy...

To Mary Anne

Come take my hand and walk with me,
the pilgrim paths that used to be.

When each new day was bright and bold,
and all our dreams were cast in gold.

On stepping stones we'd ford the brook,
with clear white wine, and one good book.

My knowing heart would follow there,
your mud-caked shoes and wind blown hair.

But now the paths are washed away;
the stream's entombed in tiles of clay.

Love's old sweet songs have all been sung;
the world's grown old, but we've stayed young.

We'll find new paths, somehow, somewhere;
you seek them out, I'll follow there.

-JJM

Whether you are doing something special today or not, I hope you enjoy your day and hope that there is a Sweetest person in your life. If the new internet installation goes according to plan, I will see you all later today.

Cheers!!
Update: (3:23P.M.) The cable guys have been and gone. They were here roughly 25 minutes and the 180 digital cable channels and DSL are running just splendiferously. Cant wait to check out the porn channels tonight!! Cheers...

That was special Matt~~ But did your Mommers tell him to "take off those damned muddy boots" at the door? :o)

Made me grin! Sounds like you guys had hallway sex.... Did you yell out FUCK YOU in the hall as you passed too?

Cheesy: Mom would get tpissed if we drug inmud or the fluff from the Cottonwood trees. As far as yelling FU in the hall, I do that everyday not just on special occasions. Cheers!!

That hallway sex? best ever!
very funny and sweet post matt-man. I hate those "special" days that Hallmark invents to sell product. Puts too much pressure on everyone.
Love when you share the poems your dad wrote. that one is very special.

Yet another gem from Dad....

Thanks for the reminder of the day...i found out that this holiday isn't celebrated across the country! Can you imagine that? Most common in the northeast part of the country!

I suppose I'll let Jeff leave the seat up all day....as my gift to him! Ya gotta be original right?

Lisa: So you are experienced in hallway sex, eh? Tell me more. Most of these "holidays" are for the women. I am waiting on someone to invent "Here Honey, Have These 300 One Dollar Bills And Enjoy Your Time at the Strip Club Day".

My dad certainly had the gift of Irish gab.

Julie: I did not know that. Your toilet seat reprieve is selfles, selfless I say. Cheers!!

Actually Sweetest day was invented by a candymaker here in Cleveland during the Depression. He went out giving food and some candy to the needy to try and help raise spirits a bit. It evolved from there.
My hubby got a card and the new Transformers DVD. He'll get the rest of his present tonight!

Schmoop said...

Raven: Thanks for the info!! As far as your husband getting the rest of his present tonight, are you saying that the Tribe will beat the Red Sox tonight? ; )

Yes I think I read once that Sweetest Day is only celebrated in the Midwest. They've never heard of it out here. That's how you escape it! ;)

Schmoop said...

Allie: Is it really worth escaping Sweetest Day by fleeing to the land of Starbucks and Birkenstocks?

Schmoop said...

Bond: You are too kind. Cheers!!

I won't call you asshole. I'll use instead my second favorite term of endearment for you.

Hey, Butthead. Have a nice day. Love ya, jerk.

BTW - loved the poetry from the Da. He rocked another one, didn't he? Gotta love that Irish charm.

Boy , am I glad I read you today...maybe I'll go have sex with someone I hardly know!!!
I've never heard of Sweetest Day....I just went to get Halloween Cards and didn't see any Sweet Cards there! But I did eat some candy today, does that count?

Your Dad, however, sounds like he was real "sweet"....
Thanks for sharing that.
Peace

Songbird: Have a good one yourself Butthead!! Cheers

Metalmom: You had me at Fu@K You. You know just how to push my buttons!!

Odat: You are already sweet enough. And my dad thanks you.

Wait...Sweetness Day? For real?!

If my job were to come up with pathetic greeting card holidays with names like that I think I'd eat a gun. I'm with Metal Mom I don't do that sweetie kissy baby wuggums stuff too well.

I can, however, scratch and itch with the best of testicle owners.

Oh and f*ck you!

Sweetness ;)

Sweetest Day? WTF??? Is that REAL holiday...I better get some time off of work.

Schmoop said...

Schmoop: Shut up asshole, I'm busy boinking someone I hardly know.

Aisby: Around here it is. And actually this year it is a Sweet Day because from the depths of your self-imposed exile you have re-surfaced. Cheers and I hope all is well with you!!

I loved the poem though I agree with your sentiments about sweet day. God help me I think I'm as cynical as you are. LOL.
