Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: The Torch Is Passed, But Is It Still Burning?

Today is of course the day that our country observes Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday.

Tomorrow, our nation will inaugurate the first black man, Barack Obama, to the office of President of the United States.

King was a courageous and unwavering advocate for the black community.

More so, he sought social and economic justice for all men and women regardless of race.

Barack Obama, I believe, can be seen on some level as the embodiment of the continuation of King’s dream.

But my friends, in those forty years in between the MLK assassination and Obama’s election, many an African-American has promulgated the dream of King and others.

I think today is a good time to acknowledge some of those of African-American heritage that moved King’s vision forward to where we are today with the inauguration of Barack Obama.

Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth…Rev. Shuttlesworth will be 87 this year. He was a close associate of MLK, and was instrumental in the Civil Rights movement in Alabama.

He was a survivor of three assassination attempts in the late 50’s. In the 60’s, he started a church and civil rights network in Cincinnati, Ohio.

I had the honor to act as his assistant for a church service back in 1998.

I was at his side the entire time, as well as having breakfast with him prior to the service.

It was both exciting and humbling to be standing next to, and talking with and assisting such a giant.

There are quite few other notables as well who promulgated the King dream.

Sammy Davis, Jr…He proved to every African-American kid that being a black, short, one-eyed Jew, doesn’t have to prevent you from headlining in Vegas.

Jimmie J.J. Walker…He made housing project life tolerable for many a black family during the 70’s. His cutting edge…um…comedy, was infectious. I guess it helped that he looked like an Ethiopian.

Maya Angelou…A beacon of hope to young, less than talented black women everywhere.

Angelou has demonstrated that if a black woman speaks in a halting, professorial style while reading her incredibly bad poetry, white folks will still pay good money to listen to her painfully bad prose.

Al Sharpton…Are you an alleged rape victim? Is the man keeping you down?

Call Brother Al, he’ll get the media to cover your plight in a minute. Fame and money are guaranteed; the truth is optional.

Eh, I guess I’m just in a pissy mood on this day that honors a great man such as Martin Luther King, Jr.

There are to me, no more Kings, Shuttlesworths, Patrick Henrys, or Ben Franklins in the world. There is no greatness.

Of course, every generation probably has said and will say the same thing, but I think we as a society, have learned to settle for mediocrity.

Time will tell the level of greatness in Obama, and for him, I hope nothing but the best. But man…

When are we going to step up and demand more from our leaders, and more from ourselves? When are we going to demand a little King from all of us?

It better be soon, because our country really needs that type of vision and that type of courage.

Have a great MLK Day, all.

Cheers!!

We'll see about Obama. He has the ability to inspire people, but once he's got them inspired can he get them to act on it?

I was waiting for the bite. You didn't disappoint.

Too many people settle for mediocrity, I agree. The worst is that they settle for it from themselves.

Jay: P.J. has his moments and he is right on this. He managed to get many to act by going to the polls, but you're right can his inspiration overcome our national laziness? Cheers Jay!!

Songbird: I think it can be illustrated through baseball. It's amazing that pitchers with 10-14 records can pull down 4 mil a year and a Shortstop who hits .237 can make 2.5 mil. That's some high priced mediocrity. Cheers Dear!!

"demand a little King"

Shouldn't it be Little King and don't they come by the case?

Seriously, we've made it so only the mediocre get involved because they can be revered in their mediocrity. YOu should go and read Faiqa's post about Obama--spot on.

And here is the link

TB: Mmmmmm, I do like Little Kings, but haven't had them in years.

Sometimes I think that many Americans today don't want to see others excel and that's why they enjoy mediocrity in others.

Thanks for the link; I'll check it out. Cheers Sexy!!

Nice post.

Hey, PJ O'Rourke is from My Toledo, you know. Nice to be know for something other than our mayor who wanted deaf people to move out near the airport because the noise wouldn't bother them.

Schmoop said...

Fantasy: Thank ya, you sexy hippie chick.

I didn't know PJ was from the Glass City, but I did and do know that Mayor Finkbeiner is one fucked up individual. Cheers Meg!!

I began reading and said - nah...this has to come full-circle and you disappointed..

Yes, you tried to throw in some silliness, but in the end you speak the truth...mediocrity will ruin us all

Bond: I disappointed, you say? And then you have the audacity to advertise your site in the comments? Holy Cow, you're an Italian Al Sharpton.

Disappointed, because you stayed true to your original statement and did not make the thing a joke.

See...you immediately jump on me when I PAID YOU A COMPLIMENT!!!!!

Schmoop said...

Bond: Ha. I knew that Vin. But c'mon...What fun is it if I don't give you shit?

Of course, now that you're getting married, I should refrain from that, because I'm sure Nancy will give you plenty of it.

And in your case, it will probably be justified. Boo Yah!! Cheers Vinny!!

I feel the same way. Especially about Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson...are they medai Ho's or what?!!

And I would like to remind everybody who uses the great MLK as the ultimate symbol of Liberal Democrats, that MLK was a REPUBLICAN. Look it up.

Cool blog. Snarky AND relevant!

Schmoop said...

Baby: Oh how I looooathe Sharpton and Jackson. Although Jackson, used to be a good guy.

As far as MLK being a Republican...Everyone has a come to Jeebus moment and comes to their senses. ; ) Thanks for the comment. Cheers!!

OH NOT A CHANCE...you are the olny one allowed to give me that kind of crap and I knew you knew - but I love to give it right back!

It will be interesting to see where this goes. I think his ability to inspire will bring about change as long as he surrounds himself with people who DO rather than say.

Schmoop said...

Bond: Damn Straight Vinny. And by the way, Happy Emasculation. But you're used to that. Cheers Vin!!

Starr: I think he has surrounded him with just those folks. Hope you're well pal. Cheers!!

Ah yes ... all is well in the world now, isn't it?

Schmoop said...

Starr: I hope you are feeling better buddy. Want me to kiss your head? Cheers Starr!!

Dana: No, things are not well. In fact, things are pretty damn dismal. Cheers!!

I am at work steaming the festivities. I am reminded of what Carl Wendell Himes JR. said of MLK and it dovetails with what you said about all of us needing to do our part.

A PRAYER FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

Now that he is safely dead
Let us praise him
build monuments to his glory
sing hosannas to his name.

Dead men make
such convenient heroes:
They cannot rise
to challenge the images

we would fashion from their lives.
And besides,
it is easier to build monuments
than to make a better world.
