7,029 Miles to Christmas

I wrote the following song in December of 1990 as the US and Coalition forces were ramping up for their invasion of Kuwait. It’s kinda corny and simple, but sadly it still has relevance…relevance that we all could do without. For your consideration:

I’m spendin’ Christmas in the Holy Land
Lying here in the sand
Face down with my arms wrapped ‘round my gun

The moon shines like steel
Down on the oil fields
And on the ghosts of Babylon

And I know if he were here tonight
Be it Moses, or Allah, or Jesus Christ
He’d say,
It’s the same old story.

I met a congressman
Who had just flown in
For a handshake and a photo-op

He watched some soldiers train
Then hopped back on his plane
Back to the states for a campaign stop.

And I know if he were here tonight
Be it Moses, or Allah, or Jesus Christ
He’d say,
It’s the same old story.

I’m spendin’ Christmas in the Holy Land
Lying here in the sand
Face down with my arms wrapped ‘round my gun

The moon shines like steel
Down on the oil fields
And on the cradle of peace undone.

Tomorrow, I’ll return to being my Holly Jolly Jovial Christmas self. Cheers!!

Hmmm. Your neocounter has changed.
A recent visitor from Dayton, US was 11 feet 45 inches tall. You got some big readers in Bagwine Country, dude.

Oh, and I like your song by the way. Just don't get Lee Greenwood to sign it. Maybe the Dixie Chicks?

Ho ho ho

Is your neocounter posting latitudes? Way cool!

As to the poem, there is truth in them there words.

Mo: Good one. It is actually ' minutes and "seconds from the last time someone hit. I'd have Dylan record but you wouldnt be able to understand it.

Boy: Minutes and seconds, but your idea is much cooler. And yes, unfortunately it is true.

Dammit and I thought I had grown!
MattM~~ Tears me up our boys and girls are so far from home...most of them just babies that will never be the same again.I watch the Sunday news programs that list the recently lost men and women's names scroll by and all I can do is cry and curse this "war". As a Mom of boys and girls those ages it kills me a little every day knowing parents around this country won't get to touch and kiss their children this Christmas. Thank you for thinking of "our" kids!

This war has been and continues to be a useless human tragedy. Merry Effin Christmas George.

What marvellous lyrics..not corny at all. Did you ever set it to music? I bet it'd be a great song. Not very Christmassy though, I do agree. Never mind, it's the thought that counts, non? ;-)

Schmoop said...

Why thanks Wendz. Yes I have set it to music. But you're right, not Christmassy enough to compete with songs such as, "Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer."

The lyrics are sad, not corny. And what's sadder is that the song is still relevant today, like you said.
