Who's Teachin' Who?

Tomorrow is my son’s last day of his sixth grade school year. This fall he will be in junior high school and a couple of months later he will turn 13. Although quite cliché, I have one question for you all: Where in the hell does the time go!!?

In less then five months my son will be a teenager, and yet it seems like just yesterday that he was 12 months old and wearing a plastic bowl on his head. We knew at that point that he was either going to be an astronaut or a sideshow act in a traveling carnival.

I swear to God, that it was just last week that my son was three and donned a cape on his back and jumped off of the back of the couch pretending to be Superman. Of course it turned out that he was more like Clark Kent because we had to take him to the Emergency Room with a broken arm.

I can vividly remember sitting on the living room floor watching TV one Saturday afternoon in 1999. I had been working as a Union Staff Representative for awhile and evidently he had picked up a little too well on the vernacular. A Taco Bell commercial came on and his hero was not on it. He asked me, “Dad where’s the Taco Bell Dog?” I told him that they got rid of him. Without hesitating he said, “We need to boycott the bastards.” I laughed, until I turned around and saw his mom standing there. She shot me the most evil look I had ever seen…well the most evil look since the last time she had asked me what was on my mind.

I have witnessed, in a fleeting moment, Ryan turn from being a soft little bundle of dependent joy into one of the most responsible and mature people I know…and no, I am not exaggerating. A couple of months ago, his mom had asked a couple of guys to go to their house and give her an estimate about cleaning out some overgrown flower beds, adding new topsoil, and applying mulch. She forgot to tell Ryan.

They showed up a few minutes after he got home from school. He saw two strange guys outside of his house and immediately armed himself and went out the backdoor to meet them on the side. He confronted the landscapers holding the phone, three baseballs, and his BB gun. He told them that if they didn’t leave he would start firing and call the police. Fortunately, Mom showed up just in time to diffuse the situation. While we told him never to do that and again and to just dial 911 next time he’s in fear, I was so proud of his sense of duty, and the fact that he just lived through more combat experience than Cheney and Bush combined.

He continues to astound me with his loyalty and generosity. Last night I went over to see him. I told him we would go play miniature golf Saturday. His mom said that she would find some free game coupons she had bought last year. My son said to me, “If Mom cant find them, I have money Dad.” Holy Crap!! The Lifetime Movie Network can’t do better than that!!

I don’t know exactly what my point is but this is what I have learned. I learned a lot from my mom and dad, but I have learned just as much from my son. I have been hit in the face by seeing how quickly my son has matured. In fact, the most important lesson that I have learned from him is how important it is to spend our fleeting days together. The relationship between his mom and I didn’t work out, but we learned to overcome that so that we can BOTH help our son grow and succeed, and as result her and I have learned from his maturity and have become better people.

Thanks Ryno, and to all of you…
Cheers!!

I got a little misty myself Lisa. And yes time does stand still in a Doctor's Office or the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The Taco Bell statement was a riot. Cheers!!

Thanks Schmoop and you more than most know who the mature one is. ; )

Hey Broseph, Going through the same deal. Cashing in everyday being thankful that he's not as screwed up as me. Cause, you know, I'm all wired wrong and stuff.

Hey Ya Nick...He is as funny and sarcastic as I, but somehow he has managed to escape the "I Think I'll Do Something Stupid Gene" that I had. Congrats on your good fortune as well.

That gene must've been standard for those of us born in the 60s. Cause I got it.

You don't always need a point in a post...

That was wonderful Matt.

My kids constantly blow my mind with the things they come up with - I am so proud of them (most of the time, that is, until they do something like holding afarting competition or a food-spitting championship).

Yeah where has the time gone..I was looking at a photo yesterday, of Nathan as an 18-month old with a pair of underpants on his head as he sat in his little red car, giggling his head off.

Now, he plays frigging chess and has all the answers to The Weakest Link.

LOL...Very Good Wendz. Your boys are too cute. And hey what's wrong with the occasional farting contest when you're a young boy? I hope you enjoyed your time away and I'll stop by soon. Cheers my friend.

Parenthood is the hardest job in the world and I have this feeling that for all my worrying, she's going to make me proud no matter how many times I screw up.

I think it's wonderful that you and your ex can work together. I wish my relationship with my ex was more pleasant.

Schmoop said...

It took a few years Marilyn but fortunately we are getting along at an age where it is imperative. The boy definately keeps us in line. Cheers!!

Schmoop said...

Nick, I think you and I are fortunate in the fact that we can teach them to be funny but rein them in because you I know what the lines were and you and I crossed them.

Gee thanks... now I've got to refresh my makeup ... you made me cry ...

You said "Where in the hell does the time go!!?" When you find out please let me know.

Seems only yesterday that my Matt was playing Power Rangers ... in little over a month he will be leaving for boot camp.

Seems only yesterday that I gave birth to my 12 year old daughter and now she too will enter Junior High next year... next thing you know she'll be graduating...

So, I'll to say "Where in the hell does the time go!!?"

Schmoop said...

The answer is Dixie is that the time is right now. I know all about your son shipping off and I pray for him. The thing is, is that time is right now and yesterday's future is today. Good luck to you, Matt, and your daughter. Cheers!!

I hope my son grows up to be like yours! Currently Elias is in this stage where whining and fighting me on every single thing I attempt to do for him is in vogue. Frankly, it's making me want to wring his neck at least a dozen times a day. Of course, he's 4. lol

I can't get all mushy about kids. I don't like kids much. But they do grow fast. And become miserable sarcastic people like the rest of us. :)

Then I come here and read this...

I feel your pain/joy Bond. It all moves too quickly.

Omigosh....just the sweetest post EVER! And from a DAD, no less.

My own turned 13 in December, and hard to believe she will be driving in 7 short months. She is a mature little thing for her age - and would be right there with her softball bat, ready to defend against the evil landscapers!

So, can your son be her boyfriend? I don't even need a photo!

I hear ya. My son is 11 and will be entering the 6th grade next fall. I swear just yesterday he was on my hip and sucking out of a bottle. Time does go to fast but enjoy each milestone. They are all wonderful.

I would suggest that Ryan is proof positive that children of divorce don't always become anti-social deviants.

Cynics, perhaps...but not always emotional cripples.

What a sweet post, Matt. It's always nice to read about your son's wittiness. Hey, the day isn't too far off that he'll be giving you tips about making it with the ladies.

Schmoop said...

Tigger: I'll send him her way. He's a good kid, but if she breaks his heart you're a dead woman ; ) Cheers!!

Carmen: Good to see ya. On the downside memories like this make realize how old I've gotten!! Cheers...

Kim: Here, have a tissue young lady.

Cheesy: So it IS possible to re-capture it!!

Raven: Thanks for peeing on my barbeque Raven ; ) Cheers...

Travis: I left the social deviant part out!!

Lizza: It wont help...Cheers Lizza!!

What sweet & funny post. It clearly shows how much your son truly loves you. He sounds way too intelligent for his own good- but that's great.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend!

Cheers!!!!!!!!!!

Schmoop said...

Sanni: You are too kind...and too sexy...and too hot...and okay I"ll stop now. Thanks Sanni, Cheers!!

Hey Ya Deb, he is very smart but he is also very caring. I think he is going to get hurt alot on an emotional level during his life because he is just so damn sweet!! Cheers..

Odat said...

Yup, time does fly when you're having fun...and you're having fun with your son....he sounds like he's turning out just right!
Keep up the good work.
Peace

Schmoop said...

Thanks Odat, he is indeed a good kid so far.

Loved your idea that he sort of arrived a decent person. Mine were just that kind of gift and they raised themselves quite well. When you are holding a grandchild, the "where the hell did time go" factor is even more spectacular. Your body may be saying 60 and your head is still 30. Avoiding mirrors help.

Schmoop said...

Ha...Good tip about the mirrors Jamie. Cheers!!

Just wait until High School, then you really will be pulling your hair....oh nevermind.
