A Conversation With My Son and Myself

A transcript of the conversation and the (thoughts) that entered my mind while talking to my 14 year old son, Ryno, on Thursday…

Me: Ryno did you just get up?

Ryno: No, I’ve been up for an entire three minutes.

Me: You need a haircut. Why don’t I take you today to get one? (Jeez, I wonder if that’s okay with his mom?)

Ryno: No. I’m fine, Dad. Why don’t I wax your head, baldy?

Me: You know what? You’d look good with your head shaved. (Why does Schmoop think I am cheating on her?)

Ryno: I think so too. But Mom won’t let me, you know that.

Me: (Yeah, I know. What a Bitch. Why does she question me so much?) I know…she’s always right, though.

Ryno: It killed you to say that, didn’t it?

Me: Not at (cough, cough) all honey.

Ryno: Ha. You’re funny, Dad. Are you gonna take me to basketball camp at 7 A.M. on Friday?

Me: Of course I am. (Why? Did your Mom say I would forget?)
Ryno: Cool.

Me: Shall we listen to The Cars on the way down?

Ryno: I love ya Dad, and I know how ya love the The Cars, but let’s listen to Green Day. You know I’m not a big fan of Green Day, so I’m doing you a favor. We’ll listen to Nimrod.

Me: (Holy Cow!! A Favor? He’s not his mother’s son.) Thanks Bud. It’ll be the Tiiiiime of Your Liiife.

Ryno: That was pretty lame Dad.
Me: (Blow Me, Little Man…Kidding) I know. I’m painting the apartment today. What are you doing?

Ryno: I am going old school, and I drug out my old Nintendo 64.

Me: Wow. You are such a hi-test throwback, my good man. (Why does Schmoop think I’ll ruin the paint job in the apartment?)

Ryno: You didn’t just say that, did you? This conversation isn’t being taped, is it?

Me: Ha. Of course I did…I enjoy embarrassing you, even in private. And yes, I’m taping it.

Ryno: I know now why Mom isn’t a big fan of yours…I’m kidding.

Me: (’Cause she doesn’t trust me to paint?) Ha. I love you.

Ryno: I love you too, Dad.

Me: I’ll pick you up at 5:45 A.M. for camp. (I bet his Mom thinks I won’t show.)

Ryno: That’s 7 A.M., Dad.

Me: Ha. I know. I was just kidding. I’ll be there at 7.

Ryno: I know you were kidding. I trust you.

Me: Ha. See ya, pal.

Ryno: Bye Dad.

Sometimes Ryno’s mom doesn’t trust me…Schmoop will admit to you (and me) that she doesn’t trust me either, but while it kinda hurts, I can live with it.

Why?

Because there is one 14 year old kid named Ryno, who trusts me implicitly. I dig that. And I will never let that trust, or him, down.

Cheers!!

Your conversations with Ryno are true treasures, and as a parent, you "get it."

Kudos to you for keeping that front and center.

David: We are a team...usually a team of comedians. As for the hair...

I tell Ryno to enjoy it now because everytime he looks at my head he is looking at his future. Cheers David!!

I secretly suspect our kids are cooler than us, Matty =(

Starr: Ya think? That's alot of cool to overcome. ; ) He's actually called me cool and funny...and not too long ago. Not bad coming from one's own 14 year old son. Tell Kidlet, she has a long way to go if she dreams of passing your coolness. Cheers Starr!!

Green Day? Oh man, that kind of pisses me off. Anytime my dad ever took me anywhere we had to listen to either The Statler Brothers or The Oak Ridge Boys. Personally? I still think they were the same group. Dad insisted they weren't though.

My dad wasn't nearly as awesome of a dad as you though.

I got lucky in that Green Day is Kidlet's favorite group evah and has been pretty much since she was in utero. Cause I played the hell outta Dookie while I was pregnant.

She refers to me as, and I quote, "A non sucking parent. In specific, one who is not an asshole."

High praise to be deemed "not an asshole" by a teenager when you be 40 years old, ya know?

Cheesy: Ha. I would have but have you ever seen my ex at 5:45 A.M.? Oy Vay!! ; ) Kidding. Thanks for the hugzzzzzzz. Cheers Cheesy One!!

Jay: Well, that was damn nice of ya. Thanks. Ha. I never thought about it, but I agree with your theory about the Statler Bros. and The Boys. Cheers Jay!!

Starr: Ryno likes some Green Day but not a HUGE fan like us. And see, if she is saying you don't suck, that's high praise for a mom coming from a teen daughter. Cheers!!

I always have a running commentary with myself in my mind...

Both you and Ryno will benefit in the next few years by having such a good relationship now.

How can you be sure he doesn't read your weblog? I get the stat counter thing...but can you tell if he has it in a Reader or something?

Schmoop said...

Kat: Yes we will, and I hope it is as good as we have together now.

And, I am certain that neither he or his mom reads my blog...they don't even know the name of it. I have kept that under wraps. Cheers!!

LOL...man I hear Matt and I in your convos with Ryno...

I wish Schmoop would have trusted you recently...It would have been a blast!

And FYI...Ryno's future hair look is based upon his mother's father not you...

The lines of communication are truly OPEN; praise Jebus!
I enjoy these conversations. Verbal ping-pong my mom used to call it.

Bond, I am (or would seem to be) following you around the blogesphere this morning. Ha!

I think I lost some of Cam's trust not too long ago, but fortunately conversations just like yours seem to be bringing it back.
