My dad would have been hitting ninety about now, so that is kinda unreal, but I miss the guy at times. I talk about my mom from time to time but rarely mention my dad.
My dad was great and he had a way with words. He was the stereotypical, smooth talking Irishman...just like the last of his sons.
Here is a poem from his first book, Irish Coffee, entitled Dinner in a New Neighborhood:
On the terrace we waited,
not knowing what to say.
We neck-bowed like penguins
and made guttural sounds
that reverberated in crescendo.
We swept the air with our wings
but obesity rendered us earthbound.
Panic-stricken, we iced our faces,
and grew silent.
Suddenly, our host appeared
and introduced us, each by name
The metamorphosis unmasked us.
Our sounds became words,
and words became sentences.
The wax melted from our arms,
and in earnest jubilation we rushed to clasp the hands
of our neighbors.
black skin,
white skin,
yellow skin,
and red.
brown eyes,
blue eyes,
roast beef,
and bread.

I can so relate to missing a Dad,Mine would have beed 85 this year.He was quite young(58) when he died in 1984.Man Hug.
Mike: Hug right back at ya. I miss him and my mom. Not in a sad sense, I just miss taling to them. Cheers Mike!!
I don't remember my dad much. He died 51 years ago. He would be 98 this past March. I was 8 when he died.
I'm so sad for you, Dearheart. I can't imagine, and am grateful, what it is like to lose a parent as mine are both strumming along still. I do know that when the day comes that I lose them, I will whither and close into a shell. I dread it with every fibre of my being, and, yet, that is the circle of life. My biggest regret is that there is none after me. It all stops here.
Each time you share words from your father, I'm more impressed with him.
Here's a heavenly HBD to your Dad.
I bet he was quite the conversationalist, too.
I lost both my parents within 14 months of each other. I know that "miss talking to them" feeling.
...the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree...
Good stuff Mahoney!
Hey there handsome! Birthday salutations on high to your Father. He creates well both in word and Son. Have yourself a fine weekend and thanks for sticking around friend :)
Thanks everyone for the lovely comments. I was at work all day so I didn't have chance to get back wif y'all. I dig any opportunity to post some good ol' Jack prose. Thanks again!!
And Lu? Like you could ever get rid of me.
Cheers All!!
Another beautiful poem Matt. Your dad was an artist with words.
At least you can take comfort in the fact that you dad was a fantastic guy. The very fact that you miss him speaks to his character and love. It’s not so for many, many others.
Very sweet tribute.
Scott: Thanks and yeah, I know that I was lucky to have him for as long as I did. Cheers Scott!!
You know me ... I love it when you share little bits of your dad's poetry - it gives us all a little insight into YOU!
Dana: Ya think? I like that. Cheers Dana!!
Your father was an incredibly talented ma; it is so dofficult to write poetry like that and toss in a piece of beef. That was, as usual, very enjoyable. TY Matty! P.S. Where can I find a copy of Irish Coffee? Cheers! Isobel
