Comedy Is Not Pretty, But It Is Smart

You know what? I’m pissed off.

I rarely get pissed off, but when I do…Ask Schmooop…Watch Out!!

I was talking to Ryno’s Mom this morning and once again, Ryno tried to pull a fast one, this time in his in his Geometry class.

Whose fault was it? That’s right.

Mine.

Ryno’s mom said to me…

“Well if you guys weren’t doing your comedy stuff all the time, he might actually learn something.”

To which I was thinking…

“Maybe if you weren’t such a bitch, you’d get laid once in awhile, and we’d all be better for it.”

But I digress…

It led me to think…Do people know how fucking hard it is to be funny? I mean, in a structured, monolithic way?

Sure, some people are naturally funny, but damn…Tryin’ to be somewhat amusing on a day in and day out basis, and add a radio show atop that is hard.

And you know what it requires? Smarts.

If one is to be truly funny, one has to be smart.

Sure…

it’s funny AND easy to make a joke about poo-poo and doo-doo, but to talk about something such as Kwaanza being related to three social workers finding a black baby in a warehouse, requires thought.

As do jokes about Zapata, Antiochus IV, and Oliver Cromwell.

This isn’t a mere rant; it’s a lesson about how people think. Birth, work a job, 30 years, pension. That’s how some people think…

And I hate it…and so did Faulkner, Dylan Thomas, Poe, Tennyson, Burke, and others. AND…

So has Chris Rock, Denis Leary, Jon Stewart, and others…

But Matt-Man you say, those guys were and/or are famous…And yeah, they were, and they are, but at some point, they weren’t. Just like you and I.

Comedy, satire, obnoxiousness is both a science and a skill, and if anyone, as Ryno’s mom told me today says it isn’t…Ima gonna kick their ass.

AND, I shall say…

If between me coming over to help Ryno with his school work because a certain someone is too boneheaded to do so…

Don’t get pissed off if Ryno and I, nuance a joke, discuss timing, and flat out laugh.

After all, there is a science and art to comedy, but there is no art nor science to STUPID!!

Cheers!!

So she's stupid and not the least bit funny either? I hope to Jeebus she's not ugly too or she'll never get laid! Some people have no appreciation for the fine art of humor.

Sorry Matt-Man, it sucks to always be the fall guy.

So you're saying this stuff doesn't naturally flow/spew right out of you and into our faces? I'm shocked. I feel lied to and cheated.

yes I did write spew in our face

Hell yeah comedy is hard. Shit some people can't even fill both a blog AND a radio show.

And by "some people" I mean "Me" haha

Anyway, comedy takes actual work and the hardest part is to resist the urge to explain the joke as a part of the joke. You have to just say "If they get it, they get it. If not, oh well."

Not everybody knows why John Phillips is jealous of Billy Ray Cyrus.

You tell her Matt-Mann! She should be glad you're happy and funny, you could be laying on the couch all depressed and shit.

Sounds like maybe she's a lil pissed that you are blowing up.

This is a joke right?

I don't get it, this isn't the normal Matt-man, sick, perverted, 4.0, high IQ humor that we're all used to hearing from this blog.

You need to post a picture of your ex in one of her 'finer' moments.

Not only is being funny hard work, but when you are good at it people expect it ALL THE TIME. You are not allowed to be melancholy or, God forbid, just plain pissed off. Nope! Gotta be funny - all day - every day.

I'm glad I'm not funny, or rich, or famous. At least that's what I keep telling myself.

I must be missing something. Is there a reason why she isn't supervising said homework if she doesn't like the way you are doing it?

My first thought is because she doesn't understand the material.

My second thought is that it is easy to complain when you have no responsibilities towards a goal.

My third thought is that if you don't make homework somewhat entertaining than Ryno like most boys his age will lose interest. By spending your evenings monitoring and providing support for his school work you are teaching him an important lesson in parenting. So while geometry is important in the long run knowing how to be a good and engaged father is a much better lesson in my book.

Don't let the bastards grind you down.

she has always blamed you when things don't go the way she wants
so many people have someone they do that to
My DIL uses me as the excuse for every problem she can't handle, especially the ones she started

Ryno is smart and funny
and he's also a teen and they slack off

don't let it get you down

I’m with you on this entire premise Matt. I’ve never fallen for bullshit social conventions about work and how you are supposed to live your life. You only get one shot at this thing, and I’ma live it my motherfucking way.

Besides, who knows how many people who, after hearing or reading us, decide to put down the gun and walk away from the huge pile of blow on my desk.

Oh wait….

Thanks Kids!! I slept most of the day Friday and missed all of your comments. Anyhoo...I guess she is, like many people are, naturally grumpy. I've never been able to understand that.

Funny one Scott.

Cheers!!
