Back in February, my son Ryno (with a certain dad's help) pulled a last minute bacteria experiment out of his butt for his school's Science Fair.
He received a First Place ribbon and advanced to the county Science Fair which took place yesterday.
As he didn't even know what the hell microbiology was until after his last minute experiment was completed, neither he nor I expected much from yesterday's competition.
Or, as the look on his face indicates, did we...?
The judges have interviewed the exhibitors. The scores are being tallied. Ryno relaxes with a friend...
The Little Man's exhibit display. A board full of information and six petri dishes full of restaurant bathroom bacteria. It's a beautiful thing...
What the...? Ryno is walking back to his seat after receiving the award for, "Best in Category for Microbiology."
Is he smiling because he is happy or is he laughing because he knows he pulled this out of his butt?
The winner speaks: Check this out my peeps. The chicks are going to dig me even more now. I have beauty AND brains...
Holy Cow; What now!? Ryno is going back up front to receive a Superior ribbon for his overall score. So much for learning a lesson about the evils of procrastination from this episode in his life.
The future of microbiology standing proudly. God Help Us All...
The booty...His scores. His ribbon. A very nice placque, and a $25.00 Visa Gift Card. I think he owes somebody we all know very well a free lunch on that card.
He was wearing a tie at one point. Where is it, you ask? Well, the future microbiologist spilled water all over it prior to the awards portion of the fair.
Oh screw the free lunch I mentioned earlier. This picture is worth much more than that. It captures Ryno perfectly...
So my friends, with his Best in Category award and his Superior rating in hand, Ryno has advanced to the SW Ohio District Science Fair on March 21st.
I guess pulling things out of one's ass and microbiology do go hand in hand. And one other thing...
We talked about his procrastination after the first fair. I know he understands and he proved that yesterday.
You see, as we pulled away from the school yesterday, there was silence bewteen us for about 20 seconds, and then...
Ryno and I began laughing...loudly. At which point I hailed him, The Accidental Genius. Yeah, he gets it, but I'll tell ya...
If he wins again on the 21st and advances to the State Science Fair finals, I am going to begin questioning everything I ever believed as well as life itself.
Have a great Sunday all. I am slingin' beer from 11-7, but that's okay. It's warm today and when my day is done, it will still be light. I can dig that.
Cheers!!

There are two lessons here - let's hope he walks away with the one that will serve him well. CONGRATULATIONS to both of you!
Dana: He was happier with the fact that he also went home with the phone number from a hot 15 year old babe. Cheers!!
Awww Matt, he really does look like a fun kid! Tell him congratulations for me! You're doing a good job, Dad.
Not sappy at all my friend!
Congatulation Ryno! and dad
...what Mic said...
Congrats to you both! This post drudges up memories of all those science fair projects my kids did over the years. I am so glad those days are behind me. Be sure to tell us what his next one will be on, I can't imagine where you go after dirty toilets!
Fantastic! The display is quite impressive. As for procrastination... well, that's a sword that cuts both ways: too much preparation is a complete waste of time and although waiting until the last minute can result in disaster... it doesn't always!
The "Accidental Genius" triumphs - well done and congratulations to the awesome father that you are, too!
That is incredible! Way to Go, Ryan!!!
The 21st? It's in the bag(wine)
YAY for Ryno!
Oh, and microbiologists are HAWT. :-)
Awesome !!!
Some of histories best work is last minute out of the ass.
Last minute or not he must have had all the i's dotted and t's crossed to have won. Right on Ry' and what a project to choose. I take effort NOT to think about a place where I am eating or I would NEVER eat in restaurants NEVER. I am a slight germa phobe.
Hope: He's a terrific kid (most of the time). He and his mom stopped by work today. He's still happy 'bout it. Cheers!!
Micky: Thanks Mick. Cheers!!
Phfrankie: What I told Mick. Cheers!!
Well done Baby Matt.. oh AND dad... we know he got the brains from you-correct?
Snugs: It was fun yesterday. I am not sure what he will do next year. I'm sure it will be interesting. Cheers Snugs!!
Desert Rat: Thanks, ye hot scientist, you. I work better under pressure myself, but he always cuts it toooooo closely. Cheers Rat!!
Metal: Ha. Thanks. I'll report back. Cheers!!
Giggle: I'll pass that on to himm, he'll be glad to know that he is even hotter now. cheers GP!!
Al: I don't disagree with that. I like last minute, but not all of the time. Thanks, and Cheers!!
Lu: He did a good job. I look more closely at places than I used to, but I haven't reached germ a phobe status yet. Cheers Lu!!
Cheesy: Well of course, and his sense of humor. Unfortunately, he got his procrastination from me as well. Cheers Cheesy!!
Kudos to you and heartiest congrats to the man child. I'm just glad that my boy child is too young to read this post lest he get ideas and delusions of grandeur for himself.
Songbird: That would not be good, would it. Ryno only has an occsional delusion. He's every bit as self-deprecating as his dad. Cheers!!
Congrats to the kid! I've done my share of last minute academic work, but I never won awards with it.
Travis: Well, his mom and I are trying to beat it into his head that he better not make a habit of it. Cheers Trav!!
Who did he get the hot freckles from?
Cheesy: Me. While I don't have them on my face so much, in the summer I get them on my shoulders big time. Cheers!!
you guys are going to both remember these times forever...way cool.
atta boy to ryno!
Holy cow that's AWESOME! Yay Ryno!!
