2016 Summer Olympics: Chicago Is Out...

I don't understand why Chicago wasn't chosen.

All cities have their flaws but even so Chicago is a great place.

Too bad. The economy could have used the boost of constrution jobs and tourism.

David: Of course it is...and all of the cities trying win the right to host have slums, crime, and whatever.

I am waiting for folks to come out of the woodwork and laugh because Obama couldn't work "his magic."

It's sad that there are Americans that are delighting in the fact that Chicago didn't get the bid because Obama was involved.

Well, Rio has poverty and crime that would make Chicago blush. I'm pretty sure what did Chicago in was Blago. The level of corruption in Illinois is too front and center for everyone.

Besides, Brazil has the hottest women on Earth. That had to help. A lot.

Also, when did conservatives start rooting AGAINST America and start rooting so hard FOR socialist countries who allow gay marriage? Weird.

Just for clarity, I'd like to say that my lack of support for the Olympics coming to Chicago was purely selfish, and primarily due to financial concerns. IL has one of the highest tax rates (the highest?) in the nation, and I just wasn't comforted by Daley telling me my taxes wouldn't go up to help pay for the Chicago Olympics. Could have something to do with the fact that I seldom believe any politicuian who tells me my taxes won't go up.

And, that second photo? That guy used to sit out right next to the building I worked at downtown - right near Union Station. He was far more friendly, and far less irritating, than the thousands of people I commuted with on the train each day. Just sayin'

Blago is only the most recent in a long long line of Chicago corrupt politicians...(which by the way is a wonderful city for food and music.)

But if you have ever done business in South America...which I have...graft and bribery and corruption are line items on your expense report.

Which ever advisors let Obama go make a personal plea were highly mistaken. THAT was a rookie move.

Obama going to Copenhagen was not a rookie move. The leaders of the other four finalists were there. Had he not gone, and Chicago lost, the people saying his going cost them the games would be saying his NOT going cost them the games.

Also, had he not gone it would have been "He doesn't care about his own home town, let alone America enough to do what the leaders of the other finalists did."

Believe me, the "It's Obama's fault" and "This is so embarrassing for Obama" lines were written long ago no matter how this worked out.

Hey Jay - if the IOC was offended by political corruption or corruption in general, Rio would never have been on the list in the first place. Plus the IOC members themselves would have to resign so I don't think Blogo was the issue.

That having been said, since Chicago representing the US of A didn't win, I'm glad it was Rio since it really is good to give South America a chance. IMHO

Seems we all have a short memory of how we treated the "other" side.

Unfortunately, there will always be a scapegoat for everything that happens that we as a society don't like.

Chicago had some things going against it - like the recent study that discounted the financial gains Chicago claimed were a shoe-in.


I'm happy to see South America get a shot at their first Olympics. I hope they do well!

@Jay... me personally...right winger than I am...was proud of our President for going. I think it would have been more meaningful if Michele and Oprah didn't go. But I KNEW no matter which way the vote went, he would take a hit. I think his advisors should have counseled "no"

Katherine: I'm actually proud of him for going too. Even though I was opposed to it. He went even though he knew it was going to be a political loser for him. He knew no matter how it turned out, he wasn't going to get a "win" for it. But, he went anyway, which magnifies the loss. He felt like it was the right thing to do.

Also, people afraid to fail never win.
