It's Not Just a Game of Notes; It's the Sound Inside Your Soul

Funny thing yesterday…okay not funny…more thought provoking. Okay not in a deep way, but in more of a personal/pop culture type of way.

Once I got home from kicking Ryno’s butt in Putt-Putt, and stuffing some burgers and fries down the bottomless pit that is his nearly 15 year old stomach, Schmoop and I drank a myriad of beers and listened to music.

Music is a powerful mental cue to remembrances of people and past experiences, both good and bad.

Many of the songs we listened to, elicited memories of my four years singing in a band when I was somewhere between the ages of 16 and 20 years old or so.

We played alot of Triumph and April Wine, so unfortunatley, Canadians come to mind as well. However...

Those days were a gas. One of the guitar players and I were relatively young, and the other three guys were pushing forty.

At the tender age of say, 18, I had never been accosted more by a sexy, boob showing gaggle of forty year old chicks wanting to have sex in my life.

Now? I’m lucky if Schmoop wants to get naked with me, although in a matter of full disclosure, she did last night, and it was magnificent.

And by the way, Schmoop…while I apologize for the bite mark on your hot, smackable, little ass, the wound from your incisors on my left nut, demands more than an, “I’m sorry honey. I got carried away.”

Anyhoo…

Are there songs or songwriters that evoke powerful memories within your mind? Here’s a few that do so for me...

I write lyrics and poetry all the time. I just don’t publish them on here because I think you’ll laugh.

I love writing them but whenever I hear a song such as, “Sunday Morning Coming Down” by Kris Kristofferson or “American Tune” by Paul Simon, I feel so damn inadequate.

But most of my memories brought on by songs are pretty joyful…mainly joyful times from my youth.

Whenever I hear Men Without Hats sing, “Safety Dance”, I chuckle and think of my friend Joe Hair Care. Some of you long time readers know of him. We had some good times together, and the clown can mimic the video dance perfectly.

Sherri is a longtime and well-known friend of the Matt-Man. There are a couple of songs that come to mind when I think of her, but one really stands out.

When I hear, “Once in a Lifetime” by the Talking Heads, I laugh because I can still see Sherri, drunk off of her sexy, not legal to drink, 18 year old ass doing the down the arm hand chop from the video in my mom and dad’s backyard some 25+ years ago.

And then there is Schmoop…

Some couples have a song, but please Mister please, don’t play B-17...No, seriously we have a song and it is a song that we didn’t pick…it picked us.

Schmoop and I met through my sister and while both attached, we were hot for each other. Things changed and we were no longer attached. I moved in with her out of necessity and she was kind enough to oblige. But…

For awhile our relationship was one of two people free, horny and living together…but it changed.

Things changed, and for once in life, not in a bad way. We fell in love, and in spite of ourselves and the jokes between and about us, we remain so.

And thusly, the song we knowingly smile to when played, is a nearly 30 year old song by the Go-Go’s…

Lust to Love.

I dig the Go-Go’s. I dig that song. And I dig the Schmooop. So, I guess it all worked out.

I have many more songs that “do something for me”, but this is just a sample. How ’bout you? What songs bring back those unforgettable memories?

Cheers!!

Geez Matt, sometimes I think you must read my mind.

I was just thinking about this yesterday.

Obsession (Animotion) makes me think of the boy I had a crush on when I was 14, wouldn't give me the time of day. We hung out with the same people and that song was forever playing on someones boombox. I did finally date him about 10 years later, turns out some things were better left fantasies.

"Delta Dawn" and "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" remind me of my dad's softball games when I was little, after the games we'd go to the sponsoring pub where the dad's would get drunk and the wives would load all us kids down with quarters for the jukebox and the illegal slot machines in the back room. Remember when a quarter bought you three songs on the jukebox?

I'm always amazed by the memories brought back by different songs I've heard throughout my lifetime. Sigh.

There is not enough room on your blog for me to list them all. The shortlist on this day of Hughes mourning would read like this:

Don't You Forget About Me - Simple Minds

Faithfully - Journey

In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel

Gloria - U2

Red Barchetta - Rush

Beautiful Day - U2

It Had To Be You - Sinatra

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Crazy - Seal

It seems like the first year that I had sex, (all with my first real girlfriend) the soundtrack was ‘Never say Goodbye’ -Bon Jovi. Even today when I hear that song it does something to me physiologically. A tear to my eye and a slight thickening ....nevermind. Damn it, we were never supposed to say goodbye. There are far too many other songs to mention.
I guess it would be kind of weird seeing all of the people you grew up with so often. There is so much that I’m glad I left behind, leaving Pittsburgh; and there is probably a lot that I miss out on as well. Although it is so big of a city even if I still lived there I probably wouldn’t see people that often. Damn you made me get all sentimental and shit.

One more though: ‘Who’s gonna drive you home’ –The Cars.

High School: Black Sabath, Savoy Brown, The Who and Jethro Tull.

Mystery: Ha. Yeah, fantasies sre often better. I think music is one of THE strongest memory jarrers. Cheers to ya Sexy!!

Starr: In Your Eyes is one of my fave songs. I heard it the other day while driving. Have a wunnerful Friday. Cheers!!

Oh my goodness, The Go Go's.
Now it makes total sense why The Charlie Daniels Band didn't do it for you.

Black Water- Doobie Brothers
Friends- Sir Elton
etc.

Schmoop said...

Micky: Don't be dissin' my Go-Go's. And yes, they're mine and I love them.

The Doobie Brothers...I like them prior to that god awful Michael McDonald taking over, and then, I can't stand them. Cheers Mick!!

Phfrankie Bondo said...

...Isn't that interesting...I,too,find Michael McDonald to be a "Doobie Brother Ruiner", just as I find Dino Valenti to be a "Quicksilver Messenger Service Ruiner",but as a rule I suscribe to Jim Morrisons edict: "Music is your only friend, until The End"...

Schmoop said...

Phfrankie: I wholeheartedly agree with everything you just said. Also, The Bee Gees were great until they went all disco on us and for a decade, REO Speedwagon ROCKED until Kevin Cronin "got in touch with his sensitive side" by writing sappy ass love songs. Cheers P-Man!!

You should post your poetry here. We won't laugh or mock you. Unless it's intended to be funny of course. And, well I should say we won't mock you anymore than we already do. ;-)

I'm going to do a post about music for Monday I think, so I'll list some songs there.

Also? Kris Kristofferson is a freaking genius.

Schmoop said...

Jay: Why add more mocking fodder when there is already some much in my typical posts?

As for KK...The guy IS a humble, matter of fact, genius. He just needs to stick to writing and not sing. Cheers Jay!!

Cinnamon Girl said...

Rolling Stone had an excellent article about Kris written by Ethan Hawke of all people.

The Last Poet Outlaw</a

Schmoop said...

Starr: Kristofferson is a great songwriter. He can turn a phrase as well as anyone. He has plenty of good ones in, "Me and Bobby Mcgee." I'll read that article after work tonight. Cheers!!

sigh.

Like everyone else, I frequently associate songs with people and events that tug at my heart.

When you unexpectedly hear a song...and for a moment there is this whole shift in the time warp continuum...

katherine. said...

the part about you and schmoop was pretty sweet...

but I'm wondering if you had to give up playing basketball with boy cause he is too good to beat?

Cinnamon Girl said...

"for a moment there is this whole shift in the time warp continuum..."

Well put Kat. You should see how fast my finger can hit the change channel button if Wish You Were Here comes on and I am not prepared for it.

katherine. said...

you change the channel at warp-speed?

when I was reading your short list...I thought "good thing Starr didn't comment her entire list. Google just doesn't have enough server space available."

I'm feeling a bit melancholy about Hughes too...

Schmoop said...

Kat: Music is a powerful time machine. As for Schmoop and I...

What was sweet? The song or the bruised balls? And yes...Ryno is only slightly shorter than I am now, and he never misses. So we just shoot baskets...we never play a game. My ego can't take that. Although actually, I am happy that he is so damn good and for which he has passion. Cheers Kat-Woman. Purrrr!!

Schmoop said...

Kat and Starr: Oh Boy...Here we go. Have at it. Cheers!!

katherine. said...

this part was sweet:

in spite of ourselves and the jokes between and about us, we remain so.

for me and Rhiannon it was math...at about 15 she was so good I had to give up competing with her. Lauren was better than any of us at any sport...but it had to do anger and feeling no pain...Cameron...he was such a teddy bear cub he would let me win at everything except video games.

good lord I am sentimental mush today

Schmoop said...

Kat: It was cute, no? I became sentimental too because that picture of Sherri shows the exact same face that she made when she saw me naked for the first time when we were teenagers. Cheers Kat!!

Cinnamon Girl said...

Yeah Kat. Pretty much any Pink Floyd unless I know it is coming. But that song in particular is a hard one to deal with.

And you will never guess what my friggin iPod just tried to play. Little red bitch is out to get me.

katherine. said...

okay roll call…which were you???

katherine. said...

your ipod is female?

hmmm....mine is definitely a son of a bitch...

Cinnamon Girl said...

"Cause when you cut down to the bone we're really not so different after all..."

Yeah I am bummed.

"Not that I condone fascism, or any ism for that matter.

Isms in my opinion are not good.

A person should not believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon: "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me."

Good point there. After all, he was the Walrus. I could be the Walrus, but I'd still have to bum rides off of people."

I guess we can add The Dead to the big list of smiling through the tears artists as well.

Stupid cut-throat iPod douche.

Phfrankie Bondo said...

..."The Stupid Cut-Throat iPod Douches" would be a good...

Cinnamon Girl said...

It would Phrankie, but you'd never get it past Paul Allen. Talk about your iPod Douche.

katherine. said...

if you kinda liked Ferris Bueller or Breakfast Club...or the other bazillion movies Hughes put his heart into...go to Starr's page and follow the link and read about the correspondence a woman named Allison had with him.

If you REALLY liked Hughes work...bring your handkerchief.

damn

katherine. said...

iPod douche....there's an app for that.

Cinnamon Girl said...

Yeah bring 2 hankies. I bawled like a baby in my work cube. Had to add it to my post to share the fun, damp though it may be.

I can totally believe there is an app called iPod douche.
