Songs in the Key of Life

Hi, it’s me again, pretty people.

Thought you got rid of me, did ya!? Ha!

So…our topic today is, songs that make you think…

Think you say?

Yes…about your childhood, adulthood, drunkhood, whatever.

I’ll start it off.

Peter, Paul, and Mary (God rest her soul) singing Leaving On a Jet Plane reminds me of my sister.

Her husband was in Vietnam when that song came out, and she didn’t know if he was alive or not.

Today? They’ve been married 41 years.

Tuesday Afternoon by the Moody Blues…Why you say? Junior High band.

I played the Alto Clarinet at the time. There is no Alto Clarinet part in that song. I sucked reeds for this?

Cats In The Cradle by Harry Chapin…My oldest brother thought this song reminded of him of my Dad, which he never got along with. God Rick, get over it already. Jeez.

And the song that reminds me of the Matt Man, is….Lust To Love by the Go Go’s. Huh, go figure.

Now…your turn. What songs remind you of something…inspire you, or…that you love. Talk to Bethy.

Zoooooves!!

It's Not Just a Game of Notes; It's the Sound Inside Your Soul

Funny thing yesterday…okay not funny…more thought provoking. Okay not in a deep way, but in more of a personal/pop culture type of way.

Once I got home from kicking Ryno’s butt in Putt-Putt, and stuffing some burgers and fries down the bottomless pit that is his nearly 15 year old stomach, Schmoop and I drank a myriad of beers and listened to music.

Music is a powerful mental cue to remembrances of people and past experiences, both good and bad.

Many of the songs we listened to, elicited memories of my four years singing in a band when I was somewhere between the ages of 16 and 20 years old or so.

We played alot of Triumph and April Wine, so unfortunatley, Canadians come to mind as well. However...

Those days were a gas. One of the guitar players and I were relatively young, and the other three guys were pushing forty.

At the tender age of say, 18, I had never been accosted more by a sexy, boob showing gaggle of forty year old chicks wanting to have sex in my life.

Now? I’m lucky if Schmoop wants to get naked with me, although in a matter of full disclosure, she did last night, and it was magnificent.

And by the way, Schmoop…while I apologize for the bite mark on your hot, smackable, little ass, the wound from your incisors on my left nut, demands more than an, “I’m sorry honey. I got carried away.”

Anyhoo…

Are there songs or songwriters that evoke powerful memories within your mind? Here’s a few that do so for me...

I write lyrics and poetry all the time. I just don’t publish them on here because I think you’ll laugh.

I love writing them but whenever I hear a song such as, “Sunday Morning Coming Down” by Kris Kristofferson or “American Tune” by Paul Simon, I feel so damn inadequate.

But most of my memories brought on by songs are pretty joyful…mainly joyful times from my youth.

Whenever I hear Men Without Hats sing, “Safety Dance”, I chuckle and think of my friend Joe Hair Care. Some of you long time readers know of him. We had some good times together, and the clown can mimic the video dance perfectly.

Sherri is a longtime and well-known friend of the Matt-Man. There are a couple of songs that come to mind when I think of her, but one really stands out.

When I hear, “Once in a Lifetime” by the Talking Heads, I laugh because I can still see Sherri, drunk off of her sexy, not legal to drink, 18 year old ass doing the down the arm hand chop from the video in my mom and dad’s backyard some 25+ years ago.

And then there is Schmoop…

Some couples have a song, but please Mister please, don’t play B-17...No, seriously we have a song and it is a song that we didn’t pick…it picked us.

Schmoop and I met through my sister and while both attached, we were hot for each other. Things changed and we were no longer attached. I moved in with her out of necessity and she was kind enough to oblige. But…

For awhile our relationship was one of two people free, horny and living together…but it changed.

Things changed, and for once in life, not in a bad way. We fell in love, and in spite of ourselves and the jokes between and about us, we remain so.

And thusly, the song we knowingly smile to when played, is a nearly 30 year old song by the Go-Go’s…

Lust to Love.

I dig the Go-Go’s. I dig that song. And I dig the Schmooop. So, I guess it all worked out.

I have many more songs that “do something for me”, but this is just a sample. How ’bout you? What songs bring back those unforgettable memories?

Cheers!!

Half Nekkid Thursday: Matt-Man Bares His Organ

Well today is my second ever Half Nekkid Thursday. I do love this so.

My lovely blogging friend Dana, has encouraged me to sell my half nekkid body out like a cheap piece of man-meat.

I thanked her, and I encourage you to do the same, and check her HNT out by clicking HERE.

I love it, because I get to give back something to all of you…not only my body, but in all likelihood a case of something reminiscent of a touch of botchulism.

That aside, this week’s HNT had a theme. Participant’s were supposed to use a high tech item such as an iPod or a shiny new Mac in their photo.

Me, being the Neo-Amish guy that I am, have nothing Hi-Tech…

Well, other than my Casio CKT-491, to which I affectionately refer to as, Tyra Soundbanks. Purrrrrrrrrr.

Ladies and Gentlemen, without further adieu…A picture of me and my incredibly large organ:

I have an extra special treat for you as well today…

I haven’t played with my ivory skinned organ in nearly twenty years, but I played with it a lot this week.

I am quite a bit, “organically rusty” and I am in not great voice…but I did a couple of lines from a Colin Hay song. Hey, I gotta start over at some point, right?

I changed a few words, but here are couple of verses of me, in only my leather jacket and an earring, singing a slightly altered version of Colin Hay’s, “Beautiful World”.

Enjoy...

My, my, my it’s a Beautiful World
I like drinking Irish tea
Sometimes we even use, a shot of Hennessey’s
I like making my own tea…

My, my, my it’s a Beautiful World
I like hangin’ out with Schmoopie
She’s a sexy woman, who can still make me weak in the knees
She can make me smile, just watchin’ her watch TV
She’s simply the greatest friend to me…

My, my, it’s a Beautiful Worlllllld…

Have a great HNT all, see ya all tomorrow.

Cheers!!
