I Like This Time of Year

In spite of my bittersweet blog memory of me not having sex with Veronica from the Archie’s yesterday, I remain happy.

In spite of Bagwine buddy Dana dragging me into the middle of a one-sided debate about racism yesterday, and as a result encountering a one-sided blogging goober chick named, Alexis from One Grand Home, I remain lighthearted.

In spite of Schmoop being despondent about our finances, I remain hopeful.

In spite of all of these things, I still believe in the spirit of Christmas, which as I see it, is the belief in the birth of hope, justice, and peace…and, no matter my circumstances at this time of year, I always have at least an ember of joy.

In fact, on this most wonderful Thursday, I want to impart to those of you who have stopped by, some of my favorite things that I really like about this time of year.

Shall I begin? I shall…

I like drinking cold beer and eating hot snacks with friends who are dear to me.

I like seeing pictures and videos of kids sitting on Santa’s lap.

I like the chick and the cute little song on the current Amazon Kindle commercial…

I like when a customer comes through the Beer Mine and says to me, “Thanks, and have a great Christmas.”

I like the smell of brewing coffee on a cold December morning.

I like the look on my son’s face when I give him an “off-the-wall” Christmas present…

Even if it’s Okaloosa-Walton Junior College versus St. Rita’s School for the Blind and Infirmed, I like watching every College Bowl game that I can.

I like watching those Bowl games with Schmoop’s brother, Dave.

I like making a crock-pot full of chili and hearing, “This is your best batch yet, Matt.”…

I like the contrast between brutal cold temperatures and a sunny December sky.

I like watching Schmoop walk out of the bedroom wearing socks, a burgundy sweatshirt, and her pink sweatpants that are far too big.

When I go to sleep, I like knowing that there are people I love, and people who love me…

Yeah, I like that...I like that alot.

Those are just some of the things I like about this time of year. If you have anything that you’d like to list, I’d dig hearing about it.

Tomorrow? Tomorrow is the Muslim New Year…Oh yeah, my site won’t have nearly the same feel as it does today.

But in the meantime...The thirty second cute as hell Amazon Kindle commercial I like so much.

Cheers!!

Awww... You're a big softy after all ;-)

I like the glow of our Christmas tree lights at night when the other lights are off, my son's anticipation of Santa delivering gifts, the food (but not this year, dieting!), and seeing my big fluffy cat sleeping under the tree (which we put up every December just for him to nest under).

Oh and I love going to church during the Christmas season.

Lady: I really dig having all of the lights off except for the tree too. Although I am no longer Catholic a good Midnight Mass is always good as well too. Cheers to ya!!

Geez, aren't we a ray of fucking sunshine today!

OK, I like sitting around the living room with family laughing and joking long into the night.

I love having the whole family together for christmas eve dinner before we exchange gifts. When my father was still alive, he insisted on a dinner of spiral-sliced ham and potato salad. (We have our turkey & fixin's on christmas day). We still have the ham and p-salad on the table but now we're more likely to have lasagna as the main course. Don't tell my father - he would be so disappointed.

Cheers Matt-Man

I love a live pine-smelling Christmas tree with lights and ornaments (from my childhood and the kids' childhoods) and popcorn/cranberry garlands.

I love the music of Christmas. The carols...traditional and newly recorded.

and a whole bunch of other stuff

Jeff: The clouds part on me once in awhile and I shall be partying down and laughing with my family on Christmas Eve. Cheers Jeff!!

David: We have always had our big family bash on X-Mas Eve too. Mom always made chili. The menu has changed, but we still get together. Cheers David!!

Kat: Yay Kat!! I love the smell of pine as well. And I wrote earlier this month, that I don't care how cheesy some Christmas music or decorations may be, I dig it all. Cheers Kat!!

Isn't it nice sometimes to just keep it simple?

I like the peaceful Christmases we have now that the kids are older.

I like getting up on Christmas morning and making a big breakfast and snacking all the rest of the day.

I like driving around the neighborhood looking at the Christmas lights.

I like listening to Christmas carols while I string garland.

Michele: I agree and all of those things you mention sound wonderful. I believe that in simplicity, the true beauty of things shine more brightly. Cheers Michele!!

...'Twas I who deleted the comment. I was doing a whole Tom T. Hall thing about "I love little baby ducks, old pick-up trucks, etc" but screwed it up.

See what happens when I excede my verbosity limits?

My official comment at this time:

...I like a good Christmas dinner with hammy and yammy...

Phfrankie: More than a one liner from you and you do have trouble. Tom T. Hall? There's a blast from the past.

This household is with ya on the ham but someone in this household, who shall be nameless and female, abhors yams. Some people!! I love em'. Cheers P-Man!!
